Facts and figures

  • Client: Highways Agency
  • Project start: October 2008
  • Over 75,000 man hours
  • Approximately 35 subcontractors involved

Interserve’s £9.8m contract for the Highways Agency involved the renewal of 3.5km of carriageway and the replacement of Addle Lane overbridge, located on the M62 between junctions 37 and 38.

Carriageway works consisted of crack and seat to the existing concrete pavement with a new flexible surfacing overlay, central reservation hardening, slip formed concrete barrier to the central reserve, steel verge safety barrier, drainage repairs and an extruded concrete verge channel.

The new composite bridge deck was constructed in a prepared field adjacent to the site and transported into place. Following the removal of the existing 360t concrete bridge deck, under a full overnight motorway closure, modifications were then made to the existing abutments and the replacement composite deck was installed.

To gain access to the M62, Interserve agreed with the Lower Ouse Drainage Board to temporarily pipe the drainage ditch to create access to the carriageway.

Achievements

  • The carriageway works phase was completed ahead of schedule despite poor weather conditions, including heavy snow
  • Successfully designed, installed and maintained Traffic Management
  • Recycling and reuse of materials including; marker posts; topsoil stockpiled for use on the verges; existing steel crash barriers; and modification of existing abutments for the new bridge
  • Minimal motorway closures due our agreement with a local landowner to use a field adjacent to the M62 which facilitated the construction of the new bridge and demolition of the existing bridge off-site
  • Safely dealt with extensive Heavy Goods Vehicle movements despite proximity to the pedestrian workforce
  • Trialling new products: Armoured studs on the east bound carriageway and a high visibility road marking system
  • Re-phasing the works has reduced requirements for; CCTV and SPECS coverage; and recovery from two heavy and two light vehicles to one of each
